Below are some of the highlights of my news career
Initial Map
Once the story broke at 10pm, details on the story were minimal. I built a map showing Reagan National Airport, Washington, DC and the Potomac River
Version 2
I worked with lead producers to ascertain the flight paths and determine the locations that were most important to telling the story. Runway 33 was where the plane was landing,
Version 3
Once the news came out that the Blackhawk did not use an approved flight route, we crafted a map showing the paths vs the doomed route
The Potomac River plane crash occured January 29 around 10pm. This was a breaking news story that required still and animated maps, timelines, and tower control quotes.
Research and Development
As a fast-moving breaking news story, there was very little information available for the first 2 hours after the incident. I created a general map showing Ronald Regan National Airport, Potomac River and its proximity to Washington, DC.
Check out my process for creating maps as the story developed below!
